Derek Newberry is an Associate in the firm’s Spartanburg office. His
practice includes all areas of civil litigation, including professional
liability defense, construction litigation, commercial litigation, and
personal injury defense.
Derek graduated cum laude from Wofford College in 2006 with a B.A. in
Government and a minor in Economics. Derek was a scholarship member of
Wofford’s football team and was a three-year starter at outside linebacker.
Derek was an Academic All-American Nominee, a four-time Academic All
Southern Conference performer, and was a member of the Southern Conference
Championship and National Semi-Finalist team in 2003. Derek earned his Juris
Doctor in 2009 from the Charleston School of Law, where he received the CALI
Award for excellence in Legal Research and Writing. During his third year of
law school, Derek was the Chairman of the Organization’s Committee and was
responsible for overseeing student organizations to ensure their compliance
with school guidelines.
Derek was born near St. Louis, Missouri, and claims it as his hometown;
however, he has lived in Denver, Colorado; Shreveport, Louisiana; Lake
Charles, Louisiana; and Austin, Texas. He now lives in Spartanburg with his
wife, Erin. Derek serves on the Board of Directors at the Children Shelter
of the Upstate and is a Member of the Spartanburg Young Professionals. In
his free time, Derek enjoys live music, running, and watching or attending
sporting events of all kinds.
