Laura Johnson Evans recently joined Wilkes Bowers,
P.A., after serving as Director of Legal Services and In-House Counsel of
Roper Saint Francis Healthcare. She graduated from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991 and obtained her J.D. from the University of
South Carolina in 1994, where she was Associate Editor in Chief of the South
Carolina Environmental Law Journal.
Prior to taking an in-house position, Laura practiced in the Columbia office
of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, where her work centered on toxic tort
litigation, including individual and class action claims involving copper,
lead, iron, cadmium, mercury, nickel, zinc, and polychlorinated biphenyls.
She also practiced in the regulatory and administrative arena, advising
clients on CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act issues, as well
as on regulations promulgated by the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control. Upon moving to her husband’s hometown of Charleston,
she joined Young Clement Rivers & Tisdale, litigating product liability,
commercial, and first party insurance cases.
While in-house, Laura’s duties included oversight of all corporate legal
matters for the healthcare system, which was composed of two acute care
hospitals and numerous freestanding service centers. In addition to managing
all outside counsel in their representation, she was responsible for
maintaining a self insured trust and for the legal aspects of contract
drafting and approval, as well as medical staff, licensure and
accreditation, certificate of need, environmental, patient rights, human
resources, and patient safety issues.
In her spare time, Laura enjoys serving as a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill
Women’s Leadership Council, being on the adjunct faculty of local schools,
and participating in local charities such as Dress for Success, the Special
Olympics, and Women Making a Difference.
